The film »Triangle of Sadness» is like this
Cinematographer Ruben Östlund, winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes for »Triangle of Sadness», comes to theaters with this satire of the world of luxury and fashion in which he plays with the possibility of a revolution that changes the social status of several people. SOURCE: EUROPA PRESS
A satire of the world of luxury
«For there to be a revolution now, it would have to come out of a compelling need and that’s not going to come from the middle class. In fact, the rich want to be sure that there are not going to be super-poor, because that could generate the need for that revolution,» the filmmaker said in an interview.
The film is nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture
The director, nominated for an Oscar for best film with this work, remarks that it is not only about making humor with the rich, «although people think it is easier». «But I also like to be able to laugh at everyone, even the poor, because we are all the same,» he said.
Humor about the rich
«We are usually annoyed when humor is made about the poor, but doing so is provocative and, in a way, it takes away a possible victimization of those people. Besides, with the rich we put distance with them, making them not seem human, but I wanted to say in this film that there are rich people who are good people: the problem is that they don’t usually like to pay taxes,» he joked.
The film shows the social divide between the ship’s employees and the customers
In »Triangle of Sadness» a large group of people come together to enjoy a luxury cruise. The social division between the ship’s employees and the clients is very evident until an accident leads to a change of status.
Several stories based on their own experiences
«My wife is a photographer and the idea for the cruise came from a job she had to do on one of them. One of the rich people who were traveling insisted on taking a tiger on the yacht for a few days, and at one of the stops they approached the zoo and asked to take it away: they got it by paying an obscene sum of money,» she recalled.
Money in the spotlight
«This kind of thing is a display of power and absurd situations of the rich, who can lose connection with reality: sometimes it’s quite an absurd world and difficult to identify with it,» he has lamented. However, it is not only money that is in the filmmaker’s sights, as he also focuses the camera on beauty and the world of fashion.
A rocking story
«Beauty has always held sway in our world, but today we exploit that currency even more. Anyway, I think women have taken over in a way, and they can sell that sexiness or beauty without needing a rich husband. Even on Instagram there is a trend of boyfriends posting pictures of their beautiful girlfriends, it’s fascinating,» she said.
The director is working on his own film
Author of »The Square», another Palme d’Or winner that ridicules the art world, has admitted that he would love to make a similar film about cinema and everything that surrounds it, although he always looks for «a frame that is something bigger than what is going on around it». For the moment, his next film will tell the story of what happens on a 17-hour flight in which, shortly after takeoff, passengers are told that they will not have electronic entertainment due to technical problems.
