On March 1st, the third season of »The Mandalorian», the series of the »Star Wars» universe starring Pedro Pascal and created by Jon Favreau, arrives on Disney+. The screenwriter director, producer and actor visited Madrid to present the new chapters of a fiction that, after two successful installments, aims to maintain the quality and thus avoid the risk of saturating the public with so many spin-offs and stories derived from the popular saga created by George Lucas almost half a century ago. «The idea is not to do too much, but enough to keep the audience hooked,» he says. «There’s always the risk of doing too much of one thing and also doing too little. And now market forces have also come into play, because studios are businesses that are trying to see how to fit into this new world of streaming,» he says in an interview with Europa Press in which he recalls how in the early years of streaming «there wasn’t enough content and now it looks like there may be too much.»

«In the end all that becomes an economic issue and as creators, as screenwriters, our mission is to protect the stories, to make sure we can make the best story regardless of economic factors or decisions,» says the »Elf» director, who believes that the key to expanding a saga is «not to do too much, but enough to keep the audience hooked.» «My relationship has to be with the audience, making sure we do the best possible job of telling our stories,» he says.

Precisely that idea, the one that everything depends on the quality of the stories, is the one that invokes to respond to Liam Neeson’s statements a few days ago. The actor who played the jedi Qui-Gon has criticized the current direction of the franchise and claims that with so many spin-offs the »Star War» universe »is losing its magic».

«I have enormous respect for Liam Neeson. He is one of the people who has contributed the most to build what »Star Wars» is now and his character, Qui-Gon, is one of the pillars of the saga, he is fundamental to understand what is the true essence of a jedi knight. He was Luke Skywalker’s teacher and, therefore, he has a deep knowledge of the saga because of his great involvement in it. I respect that he finds something so special that leads him to have such a protective vision of the saga,» says Favreau who, in any case, recalls that «we are now in a new era» very different from that of 1999, since the public now relates differently to the media and content.

«And as for whether we’re doing too many spin-offs, I guess we’ll know when a little more time passes. We’ll have to look back and see, although I hope that our stories are of quality and we’re contributing, adding and not subtracting to the Star Wars legacy,» defends the filmmaker who the only thing he can promise with absolute certainty is that in all the projects in which he is involved he works with a team of people passionate and excited about »Star Wars».

Among those projects are new series such as »Ahsoka», »Skeleton Crew», »The Rangers of the New Republic», as well as this third season of »The Mandalorian» that will kick off after the reunion of Din Djarin, the bounty hunter played by Pedro Pascal, and Grogu, the adorable creature known as Baby Yoda.

«Even though there’s all that around, lots of special effects, lots of gunfights and space battles…. the relationship between Mando and Grogu is the heart of the story. Their father-son relationship is the central core of »The Mandalorian.» Now the boy has grown up, and trained with Luke Skywalker, and the father is becoming more and more of that, a father with a sense of fatherhood. And as a father myself, that’s the part of the story that I connect with the most,» says Favreau, who recalls that when they were separated, neither was happy.

In addition, the creator of ‘The Mandalorian’ highlights that it will be very interesting to see how the media Baby Yoda combines his own jedi powers with his Mandalorian influence. «It’s interesting to see that balance between Mandalorian and Jedi culture, historically only a few Star Wars characters have had these two sides,» he says.
