In 1917, three years after the outbreak of World War I, 17-year-old Paul Bäumer enlists in the Imperial German Army with his friends Albert Kropp, Franz Müller and Ludwig Behm. They hear a patriotic speech from a school officer and unwittingly receive uniforms of soldiers killed in an earlier battle.

After being deployed to northern France near La Malmaison, they befriend Stanislaus «Kat» Katczinsky, an older soldier. Their romantic vision of war is cut short by the reality of trench warfare on the Western Front, and Ludwig is killed by artillery on the first night.
