The filming of »Barbie» was very intense
Greta Gerwig’s »Barbie» will not forget one of the most memorable anecdotes from the shoot.
Now they remember it with humor
An anecdote that now may be comical for the production team of Greta Gerwig’s »Barbie» movie, but at the time should not have been so funny.
International shortage of pink paint
Little did director Greta Gerwig, or production designer Sarah Greenwood, or set designer Katie Spender expect to provoke an international shortage of pink paint.
They were clear about what the »Barbie» universe should be like
First of all, the director was clear that she wanted to create the most authentic artificiality in the Barbie universe.
Mostly hand-painted
Thus, trying to stay as far away from CGI as possible when creating the fictional universe, both the sky and the backdrop were painted by hand.
That everything was almost too much
»I wanted the pinks to be very bright and everything to be almost too much» stated Gerwig in an interview, and boy was it too much.
Lots of pink for Barbie
So much so that when it came to building Barbie’s Dream House there was an excessive need for pink paint.
Demand grew unexpectedly
Greta Gerwig now laughingly recalls: «The world ran out of pink. And the fact is that the growing need for this color for the shooting of this film, meant that the demand for this paint skyrocketed unexpectedly.
