The strike began last week
Last Tuesday, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) went on strike after failing to reach an agreement with major Hollywood studios on contracts relating to screenwriters’ pay, especially in the wake of the major expansion of streaming services.
First strike since 2007
This is the WGA’s first major strike since 2007, when the union fought for increased funding for writers’ rooms in the face of rising major studio profits and stipulations on residual DVD royalties. That strike lasted just over three months, with screenwriters refusing to work from November 5, 2007 to February 12, 2008.
