Attends as special guest at BCN Film Fest
The American actress Susan Sarandon has valued the portrayal of violence against women that the film »Thelma and Louise» makes, since «at that time the allusion to rape culture was quite ignored, and now we are more comfortable talking about sexual predators». The actress said this in a meeting with journalists, as part of the BCN Film Fest being held in Barcelona from April 20 to 27, where Sarandon is one of the star guests.
The film is feminist, although it was not conceived as such.
Susan has assured that when it was shot «it was not thought of as a feminist film», although she acknowledged that, by portraying the union between two women, how they took care of each other and their struggle not to be dictated by men, it can be considered a feminist film.
The film was harshly criticized at the time.
The actress recalled that when it was first released it was widely criticized for its view of suicide or the murder of people: «They didn’t say that about Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, for example, which was basically the same thing, and that’s where we realized we had inadvertently entered this territory dominated by heterosexual white men; that’s where we saw that (the film) was more feminist».
The format of the film is what makes it iconic.
Sarandon also praised Ridley Scott’s format for the film, which she believes is what really «makes the film iconic», and of the ending she highlighted the shot in which the camera stays up high over the Colorado canyon and the protagonists flying with the car, since, instead of appreciating the accident, they are released.
Hollywood Criticism
On the other hand, the actress has criticized the film industry, and specifically Hollywood, considering that it has not changed much despite the fact that there are many women playing roles and telling stories.
No root changes
«There’s been a flood of funny women in film, something that I think is incredibly feminist for women, to have them in charge of explaining stories, but in terms of equal pay, I don’t think it’s changed. Or if you’re old or fat, they don’t want you,» she added.
The actress foresees a change in the future paradigm
Asked about the current film industry, Sarandon predicted a change in the future: «The film industry will not sustain itself in the way we know it today, but that doesn’t mean that people won’t tell stories or find ways to watch stories. It’s very important for people to tell stories, the film industry is not going to disappear.»
